Also, spaying and neutering companion animals is a simple and effective of reducing the homeless cat and dog population in our community. The rate at which an un-spayed female cat can reproduce is astronomical. In seven years she can have an average of 420,000 kittens! Here in Chicago and the surrounding area, approximately 50,000 animals enter our shelters each year. And although some do find homes, tens of thousands are euthanized for lack of space and because loving homes are not available to them.
Altered cats and dogs will also be better companions to their humans. They will have better health in general, will be more relaxed and less likely to try and escape from their home, and they will likely be more affectionate with their humans.
